Name Change

A person can change his or her name by filing a petition with the superior court requesting a name change.  As long as the new name does not result in fraud to the public or otherwise violates public policy, a judge will grant the name change.  Often a parent will want to change a child’s name to conform to the name of another family member, close friend or a new spouse.  In the case of a minor child, the parent not seeking the name change must be notified and either give consent or prove why the name change should not happen.

Grandparents on both sides also need to be notified and a hearing notice is published in the newspaper.  If a necessary party cannot be located or is deceased, the court has the power to waive notice.  When good cause is shown, the court will grant the name change. Garry J. Bowman handles name change cases and can guide you through the process.
